In 2012, the Durham City Hall underwent renovations to its’ exterior envelope. Deficiencies in the structure and envelope of the building were significantly affecting the energy levels and costs.

Interior renovations included major office renovations, elevator modernization, a new generator for the data center and critical systems. New LED exterior lighting was added to the revamped exterior.

A study was completed for the Durham City Hall and the Council Chambers to identify and correct HVAC comfort and humidity issues. New HVAC systems, such as chillers, boilers, pumps and cooling towers, were then installed and as a result helped improve control of the interior spaces. The use of green technologies, new mechanical equipment and upgraded exterior envelope helped decrease energy consumption.
