NCSU Carmichael Gym
The 300,000 square foot Carmichael Gymnasium is the main gym on the North Carolina State University campus and was built in 1961. The facility has weight rooms, swimming pools, steamd / sauna rooms, studios, climbing walls, basketball courts, racquetball courts, an indoor track, and areas dedicated to boxing, wrestling and gymnastics. The complex also features an outdoor track, tennis courts and outdoor basketball courts.
The gym had two original 3,000 gallon asbestos insulated, steam-powered, storage tank water heaters. Edmondson designed a plan to replace these two out-dated heaters with two new steam powered on-demand water heaters, that were located in an extremely tight room. The challenge of this replacement was to never shutdown the hot water in the gym, since there over 150 showers and a sauna/steam room.
